Shared Haemodialysis Care Virtual Course

Two-day online course running via Microsoft Teams
Funded by Kidney Care UK

RCN accredited

The Shared Haemodialysis Care Virtual Course is for pre-booked teams from haemodialysis units wishing to initiate or rejuvenate their shared haemodialysis care programmes.

The course takes place via Microsoft Teams over two days.

The Shared Haemodialysis Course is RCN accredited and provides a certificate with 15 CPD points for attendance.

Individuals will not be accepted onto this course. Your team will form a cohort with 2 or 3 other teams during this highly interactive training interspersed with self-directed learning.

While this course is free and funded by Kidney Care UK, a donation to the charity is appreciated to continue to improve access to all patients requiring in-centre haemodialysis care through this initiative. Information on how to do this is included on the registration form that will be sent to you when your team has been accepted.

Expectations of teams attending

- The team lead will discuss expectations and seek advice regarding their team members with the training lead before booking the course.

- Teams will be made up of four attendees which will include one or two patients (this can be negotiated in discussion with Tania Barnes, Course lead). All grades are welcome but there must be a senior role within the group, ideally in a managerial post.

- Each team member will complete the staff or patient questionnaire to inform the course lead of the bespoke support required.

- Team members will be familiar with the use of Microsoft Teams and have a camera for visual attendance.

- Team members will arrange how they communicate with each other during the study days if not located together.

- Team members will complete the homework between the two days and be prepared for day two with their presentation of plan.

- All team members are expected to fully participate as they would on a face to face course attending from 9.30am to 4.30pm on both days and to remain fully engaged throughout. (Exceptions are for patient attendees who are attending voluntarily.)

- Time is allocated for completion of post course evaluation. Team members will submit theirs before the end of the session to receive a certificate of attendance and CPD points.

- The virtual training will consist of PowerPoint presentations, discussions to reflect on learning, interview style discussions with guest speakers and patients experienced in shared care and exercises for the team away from the screen during the study days.

- To maintain momentum and sustain progress, staff members will be invited to attend future shared haemodialysis care network forum events. These are staff events providing a discussion forum and presentations related to patient involvement. Join us for an inclusive and ongoing community of support designed to keep shared care on the agenda.

- Patients will be invited to patient focus groups to work together on projects related to shared care collaborating with staff to improve involvement opportunities and experience of patient empowerment within haemodialysis units.

More information about the Shared HD Care programme

  • The Shared Care Patient Competency Handbook

The Shared Care Patient Competency Record, or Patient Handbook, is the result of an extended project by multiple organisations. The intention has been to provide a generic record of progress and competence that is attractive and easy for patients and staff to use on any dialysis unit.

  • Shared haemodialysis care

In recent years, it has become more common for dialysis patients to take an active role in their care. Tania Barnes, Shared Haemodialysis Care Training and Network Lead, explains what shared haemodialysis care involves, the aspects of care that patients can participate in, and the benefits.

  • Personal reflections on Shared Haemodialysis Care

A renal nurse for over 30 years, Tania Barnes manages the Shared HD Care programme and is the Training Lead on the RCN-accredited Shared HD Care training course.
